Lots of people who wear plus size clothing have a desire to begin working out, and potentially lose weight. Society often places a pressure on those who are overweight to shed pounds, but are often unsupportive of their attempts to achieve a healthier lifestyle. This suppression ranges from body shaming to not offering athletic clothing in larger sizes.
Academy Sports and Outdoors is changing this slowly, by offering a wide variety of fashionable athletic clothing in plus sizes in their BCG Plus line. They shared four photographs of plus-size fashion and fitness blogger Anna O'Brien on their Instagram. The caption of the photographs were quotes from Anna referring to the importance of being recognized in the industry and having brands like Academy Sports and Outdoors be inclusive. When people have access to workout clothes they love, they will inevitably feel more confident about working out.
While BCG Plus is already making strides, they are also standing up to body shamers and bullies online who have made rude comments about the posts. Their responses were that "we truly believe every woman should have the same opportunity to enjoy sports and the outdoors. As a result, we will continue to represent a wide range of body types. We're all different, but our access to an active lifestyle shouldn't be."
This should be an outline for all who promote body equality and positivity. How else can you weigh in? Support brands like Academy Sports and Outdoors who cater to all body types.
